Two research funds have been established to support Dr. Harry Whelan’s Neurofibromatosis (NF) Research – BENJAMIN’S NOW FUND; AND – BENJAMIN’S RESEARCH FUND – NEUROFIBROMATOSIS & NEAR INFRARED LIGHT. Both funds are established at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (Children’s Hospital and Health Systems Foundation). Children’s is a 501(c)(3) foundation. Both funds support Dr. Whelan’s research on treatment of NF tumors.
BENJAMIN’S NOW FUND
The NOW Fund is designed to get maximum dollars applied to research quickly. Donations to the NOW fund are immediately accessible for research after a minimal wait period. This is the most expeditious route for getting funds applied to the research. The NOW Fund can be depleted, continuing donations are required to avoid depletion. AT THIS TIME WE ARE ENCOURAGING THAT DONATIONS BE MADE TO THE NOW FUND.
BENJAMIN’S RESEARCH FUND: NEUROFIBROMATOTSIS & NEAR INFRARED LIGHT
The RESEARCH FUND: NF & NIIR LIGHT is an endowment. By definition donations permanently reside in the endowment fund; and the earnings only are released for the research. Thus significantly more time and money is required to get the same dollars to the researchers. Practically speaking, a minimum of 100s of thousands of dollars is required to produce meaningful earnings for research. Once the endowment is established, it lives forever and the earnings available for research depend directly on the amount of money (principal) in the fund, and the amount of earnings which varies directly on the success (yield) of the investments.
